Running with Scissors Ep. 7: Energy Pool and Perception of Life

Feeling like you’re constantly “running with scissors,” just trying not to deplete yourself? The latest “Running With Scissors” episode hits two often misunderstood, yet critical, components of your HumanOp dashboard: your Energy Pool and Perception of Life (Polarity). Wei and Brandon discuss how these aren’t just abstract numbers; they’re your personal operating specs for daily energy and initial worldview, with massive implications for your life, work, and how you relate to others.

Your Personal Power Grid: Understanding Your HumanOp Energy Pool

Think of your daily energy like gas in a car—it’s finite. Your HumanOp Energy Pool (rated from “Fair” to “Above Excellent”) comes with a number representing the “gallons in your tank”. This capacity is influenced by your physical traits and the intensity of your motivational (nuclear force) drivers.

  • Workplace Reality Check: Ever seen someone burn out trying to keep pace, or another get bored from underutilization? This is often an Energy Pool mismatch. Comparing a “25-gallon tank” employee to a “44-gallon” one without adjusting expectations is a recipe for disaster. The solution? Leaders and teams should all take the assessment, openly discuss these capacities, and set unique, sustainable performance goals for each individual. True scalability comes from predictable, reliable output, not just pushing for maximums at all costs.

  • Big Tank, Big Responsibility: A larger energy pool also means you need to be more diligent in feeding your motivational drivers to keep that tank full and avoid dipping into reserves.

Beyond Optimist vs. Pessimist: Your Perception of Life (Polarity)

This fascinating metric reflects the average ratio of positive to negative ions in your personal ecosystem. It shapes your initial reaction to situations:

  • Positively Charged: Naturally solution-focused, tending towards a more positive initial outlook (think USA as a culture).

  • Negatively Charged: Initially problem-focused, quicker to see what’s not working (think Germany). In positive-leaning societies, these individuals can be unfairly labeled or pressured, often not given the space to fully express their perspective (which eventually includes positives!).

  • Neutral: A more balanced initial charge, though may have a slight positive or negative bias.

It’s crucial to remember this is an initial tendency, not your entire personality. Wei notes the scale seen (+14 to -8) and how more extreme polarities require greater self-awareness to manage effectively, dialing the intensity up or down to suit the moment

Talk to HAi: Your Personalized Prompts for Energy & Perception Mastery

Understanding these facets of your design is powerful. Applying them is transformative. Here are some prompts Wei suggests you can ask HAi in your HumanOp app:

  • For Your Energy Pool:
    • “Hi, what is the optimal number/amount of tasks that would best support my energy pool?”
    • (With your to-do list handy) “Hi, based on my current energy pool size, is this list of tasks too much for me today?”

  • For Your Perception of Life/Polarity:
    • “How can I best utilize my [Positive/Negative/Neutral] perception of life in this upcoming team meeting?”
    • “How can I learn to better manage dialing up or down my perception of life depending on the situation I’m in?”
    • “In what types of situations do I most need to adjust my perception of life to avoid creating challenges or jeopardizing outcomes?”
